Sunday Times style on a shoestring
17 Dec
Yesterday I was reading the Sunday Times Style magazine and was, as I always am, fairly outraged at what their idea of ‘on a shoestring’ actually means. Their ‘shoestring’ version of Alexa Chung’s Valentino outfit comes in at around £1000. Er. Yeah. That might be a cheaper alternative, but it is way beyond the financial means of most people in this country! So, might we present, our Sunday Times style on a shoestring – actually affordable alternatives for The ‘LLD’ (ladylike dress), ‘Go Minimal’ and ‘Cream Dream’. You’re welcome!

(Prices and availability are accurate at time of posting, but some of these are sale prices, so they may not stick around for long!)
The LLD

1. Bow belt, ASOS, £8; 2. Top, A Wear, £19; 3. Handbag, ASOS, £24; 4. Bell-shaped skirt, ASOS, £20; 5. Shoes, ASOS, £40.
Style total: £1008; Our total: £111
Go Minimal

1. Bracelet, TopShop, £15; 2. Maxi skirt, ASOS, £21; 3. Shirt, Kookai, £27; 4. Hair brooch, £8.
Style total: £512; Our total: £71
Cream Dream

1. Blazer, Red Herring, £27.50; Silver bag, New Look, £10 (same as in Style); 3. Sequin jumper, ASOS, £28.50; 4. Trousers, ASOS, £35; 5. Bracelets, £7.99 and £4.99, New Look – wear one or both – they’re buy one get one free
Style total: £769; Our total: £108.99

I’m glad I’m not the only one to get cross with Sunday Time’s Style. You’re options are way more interesting and much more purse-friendly.
Great job! And great post idea. Would love to see more in the future

Thanks Elena! I will definitely try to pull one of these together every now and again – it was really fun (although painful for my wallet – I ended up buying three of the items on the ‘LLD’ list!!)
Brilliant post. Style and other fashion/lifestyle mags really annoy me with their “budget” options. £300 for a necklace? Err, I don’t think so!
I know! These articles get me so aggravated. I was very ‘vocal’ with my annoyance yesterday (poor Peter), but finding my own version was really fun, so will definitely do it again…
Genius! who in their right mind things £1000 is a shoestring!
What a great post! I can’t believe they considered £1,000 to be shoestring. I love the silver bag from New Look; I may have to have a browse on their website.
It’s crazy, isn’t it? I ended up getting the lace top, bow belt and a similar bell shaped skirt last night after all my trawling… Oops!
Brilliant post! I much prefer the styles you picked out too
Thanks, Jo!
